I seem to be good at failing, recently. This month has felt like a series of personal and professional failures, resulting in un-culminated expectations and desires, not-quite-realized dreams, and sad, sleepless nights.

When I was young, new material was effortless to absorb. When I started growing up, things for a little tougher but I could still skate by without trying too hard. Now, even when I study for weeks and drill on a subject, I can't pass a single test.

Asst some point, failure became part of my life - a thing I am resigned to, rather than a thing that I knew of from descriptions.

I don't like it. But I can't fight it. And I don't know what to do about that, which is just another failure.

One in what feels like it will be a long series. Maybe this just isn't my year.

I think DLC is a mixed bag. Sometimes it can be valuable added content, almost a mini-sequel, and sometimes it can be things that just feel like they should have been on the disk in the first place.

Ladies and gentlemen, the doctor was in last night.

Doctor Horrible, Captain Hammer, Little Red Riding Hood, and the Big Bad Wolf tore it up at the Steamwhistle brewery for day one of their annual celebration of how awesome it is to dress up completely impractically, drink until you can't remember how you got home (umm... yeah...), and do the bump and grind. We were accompanied by Frankenstien and his bride, a '70s partier, and a bat (best bat EVAR).

I'm going to try to find some photos from the brewery's site, but it can take a few days for those to show up. Here are a few from my phone and camera from the pre-drink to tide you over.

In Canada, today is Thanksgiving. So I figure, since I'm in some kind of good mood for once, that I'll list a few things for which I should probably give thanks:

My loves, Dan and Lianne and Von and K.

My family, chosen and otherwise.

My first world lifestyle and my wonderful toys.

Nights with clear skies and a view of the moon.

My good job and the combination of talents and skills I have that helped me land and keep it.

Simple things. Important things. The foundations of a modern life. I am thankful for these things and hopeful that I keep them for the next year.

I'm exceptionally pleased with how it looks on me and with the artist and tattooist involved - I love having this unique, meaningful, beautiful image on my skin.

Just before heading off to New Zealand, Lianne got to take part in the Arabesque Dance Academy's student gala. I was there with my phone camera to cheer her on (and watch a bunch of other pretty girls shake it)... what follows are a bunch of photos from the event, and above is a video of one of her performances (with zylls!). Out of order, of course, because I am a lazy, lazy man... but honestly? I was really proud of her. She looked so happy and amazing, and that's the way I'l be remembering her for the next six months.

The Misanthrope - no, not me for once!

Lianne and I went to Stratford to see The Misanthrope. The production and performance were excellent, despite it being a preview, and the day lent itself to a nice walk by the river and a quick photo on the terrace at the Festival Theatre.

We're taught that working hard and showing our dedication is the best possible thing for us. Why is that?

I'm working my life away for the promise of a future where I work my life away. Sometimes I love my job so much it's all I can think about, and the promise of more challenges exhilarates me. But sometimes, when I'm tired and unfocused and able to drift in my own haze, I ask questions like...

Healing

Getting surgery is a strange thing. So much of it is waiting: the referrals, the consultation, waiting for a time in the operating room, the follow-up. The biggest part of healing is waiting, too: waiting to take the first set of dressings off, waiting for the stitches to come out (mine are still in), waiting for the full range of motion to return.

I'm at the hospital, 3 of my 4 incisions healed and the fourth refusing to stop oozing. I can put my full weight on my left leg, but I can't bend it the same way I can bend the right one, and I can't walk without limping. 13 days after having the loose cartilage removed, and my knee is still swollen and I still have bruising on a good portion of my leg.

I'm still sure I made the right choice. When full motion returns and I go months or years without having my knee lock up on me so painfully that I can't stand, I'll forget the minute agony of the hospital hallway and remember that I made the best choice I could as soon as it was an option.

I still hate the waiting though, the spending of precious time on nothing important, the forsaking of duties in favour of forced dalliance. I'll be glad when this is over with and I can get back to work.
